Exped SynMat 9 LW review

Sleeping comfort

I am actually into having ultra light gear, but I wanted a mat that could be used in winter, and that had maximum comfort.

Exped SynMat 9 LW did not disappoint me. Excellent sleeping comfort to be in the outdoors. Even if you put up the tent on a bit of a rough ground, the Exped SynMat 9 LW will do you the favor of creating a smooth ground to sleep on.

Exped SynMat 9 LW review - downside

I had watched a few videoes on how to pump the mat, but it looked fair more easy on the videos that in actually life. Before using the fist time, the mat should lie flat for a while, in order for the pump of the Exped SynMat 9 LW to get a bit filled with air. This could be smart to remember before trying it the first time. And it would be an advantage to try it at home before going camping.

Going for the Exped SynMat 9 LW version (long wide) gave maximum comfort, but I actually noticed that during the night I was sleeping with the body a bit bent, so I was not using the mat to it´s full length. If I was goint to buy the mat again I would have considered to buy a smaller version. Maybe the Exped SynMat 9 UL M or SynMat 7 M or MW. Then it would be less time to fill the sleeping pad with air and less wight.

I feelt that the mat was a bit slippery even if it had some anti slide material on the upside. Atleast if you do not sleep on a 100 % flat ground you might end up sliding a bit down on the mat.

Exped SynMat 9 LW repair kit and durability

You get a little kit of repair with the mat, but for me it looked like the material was solid, and that it was not easy to puncture.
The UL versions that are lighter are said by Exped to be not that durable.

Exped SynMat 9 LW compared to other types of sleeping mats

I have used the Mammut Bamse Extrem cell foam sleeping mat. This would make my hips a bit stiff as almost all pressure was on the parts of my body first touching the ground. On the same trip that we tested the Exped Synmat, another person used a self inflating sleeping mat. This would suffer from the rough an uneven ground and give very much less sleeping comfort.

Compared to the down mat I felt that the SynMat would give better isolation in case it got punctured. This because the synthetic fill is evenly placed on the inside of the sleeping pad, wile the down could give more cold spots. The weight was almost the same between the SynMat and the down mat, so I did not let that do the decision.

Exped SynMat 9 LW highlights

  • 1. Sleeping comfort
  • 2. Quality and durability
  • 3. Warmth

Exped SynMat 9 LW review conclusion

I would definitely recommend the Exped Synmat 9 sleeping pad. You can reconsider if you want the LW version or if a smaller and lighter is big enough. I have the Moutain Hardwear Direct 2 tent, and the sleepig pad has slightly more volume and weight as the tent itself, so I guess with a smaller pad most equipment could fit a 45 litre back pack for a small trip spring, summer or fall.
